Bancroft Students Show
Some Heart Students
from The Bancroft School donned their sweats and
laced up their sneakers recently for Hoops for
Heart. A fund-raiser for the American Heart
Association, students completed skill drills such
as dribbling, passing and shooting baskets, to
raise money pledged by sponsors. The event
promotes the value of physical activity and the
importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle
while teaching students about the seriousness of
heart-related
illnesses. |

April is National Autism
Awareness Month The designation
of Autism Awareness Month helps us all raise
awareness of autism in our local communities, and
many of our families and staff are doing just that
this month and routinely. According to Autism
Speaks, autism today affects 1 in 110 children; 1
in 70 boys, representing a 57 percent increase
from 2002 to 2006 alone. Click here to learn more

Joyful
Noise is a joy with Singing
City
Joyful Noise performed recently with the
Singing City Chorus at the Church of the Holy
Trinity on Rittenhouse Square in
Philadelphia. And, what an event it
was! Following are letters from several
family members who were in
attendance. The following
letter was written by Paula Siegel, the
grandmother of a young man served by
Bancroft. "The chorus
members of Joyful Noise once again brought the
audience to their feet - twice (!) - when they
performed on Saturday, March 20th, at The Church
of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square in
Philadelphia. Invited by Jeffrey Brillhart, Music
Director of Singing City, thirty Joyful Noise
singers from New Jersey and Delaware participated
in Voices of Philadelphia - One Family, along with
the Singing City Choir, Chester Children's Chorus,
and Northeast High School Concert Choir. Each
chorus individually enchanted the audience with
compelling musical renditions, and then all four
choruses combined to present a grand finale.
Joyful Noise's Director, Allison
Fromm, invited Mr. Brillhart's sister, Julie, who
lives in Iowa, to be a guest singer with Joyful
Noise for this special occasion. 'I thoroughly
enjoyed myself! Absolutely, it was fun!' exclaimed
Julie, who noted that this concert was the 'very
first time' she had performed with her 'pretty
special brother ... and hopefully, it won't be the
last." Micki and Lanny Edelsohn,
parents of Delaware member Rob Edelsohn,
commented, "The singers' smiling faces told the
story of pride of accomplishment, joy of singing
and thankfulness for inclusion! Bravo to Allison,
Rob and all those who made this a special evening
for everyone." My grandson, Alex, is
the youngest and most recent addition to the
Joyful Noise ensemble. Singing and "entertaining"
is Alex's dream come true, and it is evident that
all members of Joyful Noise share this passion
along with him. Words are inadequate to convey the
depth of emotion in family members when they see
their loved one living a quality of life that they
never could have imagined possible. I am
filled with gratitude and awe, not only for the
unique talents of Allison Fromm, Director, and
Cathy Sonnenberg, Associate Director of Joyful
Noise, but also for the fact that the staff at
Alex's group home transport him to weekly
rehearsals and even attended the concert with all
the boys from the group home! At Bancroft, One
World For Everyone is a reality and not just a
dream. The audience was visibly
moved by their performance. One listener, not
related to a Joyful Noise singer, turned to me and
remarked, with tears in her eyes, "I loved the
whole thing, but this was the best part of the
program!" By including Joyful Noise in "Voices of
Philadelphia - One Family" Mr. Brillhart has
helped to make this a better world for
everyone!" The following
description was written by Mary Ann and Dick
Nolan, the parents of a woman served in our
Delaware Program. "Elizabeth
absolutely loves music and singing. Being involved
with 'Joyful Noise' has been a wonderful
experience and a real outlet for her love of
performing. What a treat to see 'Joyful Noise'
included in a wonderful program in the magnificent
Trinity Church. It was a joyful evening and
we thank Rob for extending Elizabeth the
opportunity to be a part of the choir. We hope the
songs continue." View photographs from the event on the
Singing City website.

Autism Research Study:
Families Wanted
We are
collaborating with Drexel University School of
Public Health, the Children's Hospital of
Philadelphia, and University of Pennsylvania
School of Nursing on the Early Autism Risk
Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI) Study. The
EARLI Study is a national study of genetic and
environmental exposures, particularly during early
pregnancy, which may contribute to the development
of autism. It is the first large, longitudinal
study of its kind, and involves pregnant mothers
who already have a child on the autistic spectrum.
We are very excited about this study because of
the scope and magnitude of the project, with
collaborations with other major academic medical
centers across the country. It is our hope that it
may ultimately provide the answers to questions we
all have been asking for years. We
are supporting the EARLI Study by reaching out to
our families to determine if anyone might be
eligible and interested in participating in this
research study. The study is currently recruiting
mothers of a child with autism spectrum disorder
(ASD), who are also 20 weeks or less pregnant or
who may become pregnant. Also, we encourage you to
pass this information along to other families who
may be in a position to participate as well.
