Accepting the proclamation: Sarah Gharbi (at the podium), Brick Program Director, accepted the Proclamation on behalf of all those supported by Bancroft, and was accompanied that evening by a large group of staff members and persons served. From left to right: Lindsey Cullum (staff member), Glenn Brummer; Kareem Moye, Council President Anthony Matthews, Mayor Stephen Acropolis, Justin Lindstrom, Adam Silversmith (staff member), and Keith Worthy.

Brick Township promotes brain injury awareness

Adam Silversmith, a staff member at our Brick (N.J.) Program, prompted a proclamation by Brick Township Mayor Stephen Acropolis that proclaims this month National Brain Injury Awareness Month in Brick. Through this proclamation, Acropolis called upon all citizens to take some time this month to learn more about traumatic brain injury, the impact it has on our society and the measures we can take to protect our loved ones.

Open House at new Brick facility

Our Brick Township Day Program for adults with acquired brain injuries and our marketing team hosted an open house on Friday to introduce the expanded program to families, professionals and members of the Brick community.

At the event, Bancroft President Toni Pergolin spoke of the importance of building strong community connections in our goal to make it one world...for everyone. The expanded program will provide greater opportunities for lifelong learning and fulfillment among those we serve in Brick, while helping to meet local needs for services. This larger space allows us to provide increased rehabilitation therapies and structured group activities within the same facility.

Clair Rohrer, senior director, shared how the program developed over recent years and expanded to this very nice facility, and several of those served in the program spoke up in agreement.

Kareem summed things up in one word: "Fantastic!"

Margaret Lindstrom, whose son Justin is served in the Brick Program, spoke about the challenges families face in finding appropriate programs for their loved ones. She described Justin's progress at Bancroft over the past several years and how happy he is today pursuing his many interests.

For instance, Justin was inspired to draw after seeing a pen-and-ink drawing at a local art show. He insisted on stopping on the way home that day to buy supplies, and he's been pursuing his talents in that area ever since. He has had his work displayed at various exhibits, including the Creative Arts Expo and Cool Beans Coffeehouse, and has one "on loan" in the Brick Program office. He also now designs and sells t-shirts.

Justin has been able to pursue his love of the environment, too. He built a bridge in the woods near his apartment, and works with staff to clean out the woods.

"It's been a long, hard road," said Margaret Lindstrom. "Families really should have more resources available to them so they can learn about programs such as this..."

Congratulations to our skiiers!

Four individuals served by Community Services for Adults competed in the Special Olympics Winter Games in Vernon, NJ. All four skiers participated in the slalom and giant slalom races and took first-, second- or third-place in their divisions.

The athletes also enjoyed opening ceremonies on the slopes, dinner and dancing, and a two-night, slope-side stay at Mountain Creek's new Appalachian Ski Resort. It was a great trip of skiing and catching up with old friends.
New Jersey budget hearings underway this week

Community programs for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities have been well represented at the Assembly and Senate Budget hearings this week.

Congratulations to all who are testifying. We are definitely making an impact. Legislators are listening. And, on behalf of all of our families, special thanks to the following family members and persons served who are testifying this week:  Gloria Crews, Bonnie Davis, Donna Icovino, Nikos Pappas, and Bill Wills. Thank you for speaking up! Click here to see a copy of the Courier Post article about the budget hearings.

ABCD has put on its website its testimony, as well as two papers (Family Cost Share for Early Intervention and Contribution to Care and Maintenance). For further information, you can click on http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=5elorodab.0.0.7n9pimcab.0&ts=S0473&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.abcdnj.org%2F&id=previewand check out the Action Needed section (on the right side of the screen) with testimony and papers.

Surprise Patrol visits Bancroft staffers

With arms full of balloons, flowers and other goodies, Bancroft's Surprise Patrol visited Laura Segal, R.N., Monique Miller and Theresa Gentile recently. Similar to the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol, Bancroft's Surprise Patrol is part of the organization's staff recognition program for employees whose performance is consistently above and beyond what is expected.

Laura and Monique, employees in the Community Residential Services for Adults Program, earned a visit from the Surprise Patrol for their tireless efforts on behalf of two individuals struggling with serious medical issues. Working together, Laura and Monique patiently helped them to develop the confidence and independence they needed to participate actively in their medical care.

Theresa Gentile, Bancroft's MIS Director, received a visit from the Surprise Patrol for her extraordinary efforts to ensure the smooth transition from the old phone system on the Haddonfield Campus to the new system. A monumental project, she worked many extra hours, answered numerous redundant questions - all without complaint, but with a smile and sense of humor.
Free Developmental Disability Workshop: Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Bancroft will hold its next free Developmental Disabilities (DD) Workshop on Wednesday, April 7, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

Designed for families and professionals, the session will focus on describing the varied characteristics of autism, pervasive developmental disorder and Asperger disorder. The workshop will also cover the criteria for medical diagnosis, prevalence among the population, known etiology, the domain areas of affected impairment, and associated features of each diagnosis.

The workshop will be held in the Farrington Building on Bancroft's Haddonfield. For further information or to register, please contact Pat Reid at (856) 524-7453 or email preid@bnh.org.

These workshops are available to the public at no charge. Support generously provided by the TD Charitable Foundation.

It's just a matter of saying "Thank you!"

Here's your chance to show your appreciation to our direct-support professionals (a.k.a., direct-care staff) in person. Mark your calendar today so you can participate in our annual Staff Appreciation Festival. This year's event will be held June 2 in the Haddonfield area and June 9 on the Mullica Hill Campus.

In recent years, families have volunteered at the events and donated thousands of dollars to provide many wonderful prizes for our staff prize drawing. Hundreds of deserving staffers have received great prizes through these drawings, and have genuinely felt appreciated by the families. And, that's why we hold these events - to give a giant and much-deserved "thank you!"

Please plan now to participate in any way you can. The Family Council will be sending letters soon with all of the details. Please watch your mail for them and be sure to respond.

When families show enthusiastic appreciation to those who make a positive difference in their loved one's life - through these events and at other times - it means so much to our staff and does wonders for everyone's morale. So please save the date and plan to join us!
Reminder

Don't forget to return your Family Satisfaction Survey to let us know your feelings about Bancroft programs and services. It's due April 15, but why wait?
