Prom: a night to remember

Students, staff and family members danced the night away at The Bancroft School's prom recently. The prom is one of our most special events, with many of our students dressed to the nines and enjoying a wonderful night out with friends and family. To view additional photos of the prom, use the link below.

Surprise party for Petco

Workers
at a Petco store in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, got a festive surprise last week, when a Bancroft group showed up with balloons, cake, lunch and a plaque in their honor.
The party-throwers - a.k.a. Bancroft's Surprise Patrol - came to thank the shop for it commitment to employing people with disabilities.

The celebration also marked a milestone for Brad Silberstein, a man served by Bancroft: Silberstein has worked at Petco for 15 years.

"Brad is very passionate about the work he does and always likes to make sure he's doing a good job," says Petco store manager Jason Spiris. "Over the years, he has been through many general managers, as well as a relocation, and has proven himself to be able to grow with the company as the company has grown. He is a solid part of our Petco family."

Bancroft executive Dan Keating expressed Bancroft's appreciation to Petco during the party. "Our mission is to help individuals lead more fulfilling lives as respected members of our communities. There is no better way to do this than through employment. We are grateful to Petco for providing these opportunities. And we congratulate Mr. Silberstein for his success there over such a long period."

The Surprise Patrol has honored seven employers over the past three years. Organized by Bancroft's Supported Employment Program and its Business Advisory Committee, Surprise Patrol visits are awarded to businesses that truly understand that employing those with disabilities is very often a "win-win" situation.
Joyful Noise to host choral festival

Magic will happen on Tues. June 29, when Joyful Noise - a chorus of adults served by Bancroft, and other persons with disabilities - presents a choral festival and sing-along.

The event, called "Singing from the Heart," will bring together singers from several community choirs, including persons with and without disabilities, at the Katz Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

The festival will include a free community sing at 6:30 p.m. (donations are welcome), plus daytime workshops for choristers on vocal technique, rhythm and movement. People with disabilities and community choir members can still register for the workshops: call Cathy Sonnenberg at 215-771-1003 or e-mail cathy@joyfulnoisechorus.org.

The community sing will be led by renowned composer, conductor and song leader Nick Page, founder and director of Mystic Chorale in Arlington, Mass. He is best known for working with any gathering - people of all ages and abilities - and in one evening, turning the group into a harmonious community of voices, singing songs from many cultures around the world.

"I was more moved by Joyful Noise than by any choir I have ever heard," wrote Page after first hearing the group. "I came in thinking I knew everything there was about choral music and these angels proved that I had so much more to learn. They sang with unchecked emotions. The feeling was divine... I did not see their disabilities. I saw their gifts."

Page has composed two pieces for the chorus, one of which he will lead at the festival. "Its message is the message they taught me: you have a heart, use it... let it out."

Festival participants also include the Kardon Chorale of Philadelphia, the SAIL Choir of  Samost Jewish Family and Children's Services, and a special-needs program at the JCC.

The event is sponsored by Joyful Noise, the Kardon Institute for Arts Therapy, and the Katz JCC. Partial funding is provided by Target.

Volunteers needed for Calling Parties!

We're looking for volunteers for our upcoming Calling Parties, June 22-24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. As a volunteer, you'll call Bancroft family members and past donors to follow-up on our recent fund-raising mailing. Volunteers can sign-up to make calls for just one evening - you do not need to commit to every session to participate. All Calling Parties will be held in Bancroft's offices at 800 Kings Highway North, Suite 401, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. We'll provide pizza, refreshments, phones, calling lists, and a script to guide you in your phone conversations.

Who better than Bancroft families to speak to the importance of supporting Bancroft's mission? In fact, recently Jill McDowell, Danny's mom, wrote such a beautiful note about Danny, and how far he's come. She wrote this letter to encourage support of our annual giving fund, The Bancroft Fund. Unrestricted support is needed in order to continue to provide high quality, effective and fulfilling programs for Danny and many others.

We just mailed Jill's letter - our last appeal letter of the fiscal year - so please respond and help us close the gap and reach our goal and calling others!

To join the party, call Michael McLaughlin in the Development Office at (856) 348-1171.

Help build accessible playgrounds

A nice family event is coming up next month, to raise funds for several Boundless Playgrounds™, which enable children of all abilities to play together.

The 3rd Annual Cooper River Park Family Fun Festival will be held Saturday, July 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Pennsauken, New Jersey park - a short distance from Bancroft's Haddonfield Campus. Click here for the event flyer.

While we hope you will keep Bancroft as one of your top priorities for charitable giving, we recognize the benefits of creating more accessible playgrounds to meet the needs of families who have children with disabilities. Since this is right in line with our mission, we are pleased to help build awareness of this effort. For more information, visit www.buildjakesplace.org.

Haddonfield property planning moves forward

We have been working over the last few years to plan for the future of our Haddonfield campus-based programs, with very serious consideration being given to relocation so that we can develop state-of-the-art, fully accessible facilities for the children and youth we serve there. This is probably one of the most vital and complex projects we are working on to ensure the future of Bancroft. It's one of the most exciting as well!

As a way of an update on our progress, the Borough of Haddonfield will be conducting a public meeting next week to discuss plans for the future of our current property if and when we relocate. Over the last few years, we have been involved in some preliminary planning efforts, and we view this Borough meeting as the first major step toward our new facilities. We fully support the Borough's efforts to plan for the best possible use of our property if and when we move.

If you have questions or learn of concerns or questions from others related to our plans, please refer them to our Communications office through Kathy Ross or another member of the executive staff. We will continue to keep you updated as we continue to make progress.
